The Community

PIERSON LAKES. Very much a hidden treasure, the Pierson Lakes community is limited to only 74 homes spread throughout more than 1,000 acres. The manned, guard-gated entry to Pierson Lakes is within only 45 minutes of New York City, although the community’s lush vegetation and naturally preserved beauty (roughly three-fourths of the subdivision is dedicated to a natural preserve) creates an environment that feels like it’s worlds away from the hectic pace of city life.

The “Lakes” for which the community is named include Cranberry Lake (103 acres) and Poteake Lake (92.5 acres). Although most residents have private dockage, the community also includes the Pierson Lakes Boathouse, which offers dockage for smaller boats in addition to a “sandy beach” and picnic area. The fitness and/or outdoor enthusiast will also enjoy Pierson Lakes’ miles of walking and riding trails, set against a backdrop of natural beauty.

The Location

STERLINGTON / SLOATSBURG, NY. Sterlington is a small hamlet near the village of Sloatsburg, New York. (While a hamlet is not given one, precise definition under New York law, the term is generally used to refer to an unincorporated area within a town). It is situated in the town of Ramapo in Rockland County, New York. Ramapo earned a nod as one of the “Best Places to Live in 2014” by Money Magazine.

Sterlington likely derives its name from a lake located there: Sterling Lake. Because of the hamlet’s small size and its relation to Sloatsburg, the location of “Sterlington” is often identified simply as Sloatsburg.

The village of Sloatsburg offers its residents the peaceful charm of a country town combined with the convenience of being located within a 40-mile drive from the heart of Manhattan. Rich in history dating back to the Revolutionary War, the community played host to George Washington several times throughout the 1770’s, and was the home base for American troops stationed in the Ramapo Pass.

John Drake Sloat, of the family for which the town was named, was a commodore in the United States Navy and was known for claiming California for the United States in 1846, and for becoming the 1st Military Governor of California. Many of the family’s properties, including their first home, are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The village (one of fifteen within the Town of Ramapo) is comprised of approximately 2.5 square miles and rests at the foot of Torne Mountain, which served as a lookout for British ship movements on the Hudson River during the Revolutionary War. Interestingly enough, the village is purported to have been a popular spot for stills and for bootleggers during American Prohibition, largely due to the combination of its rural setting and its proximity to New York City.
