FRANKLIN, NC. A small mountain town in Macon County, situated among the Blue Ridge Mountains of far Western North Carolina. Established in 1820 and incorporated in 1855, Franklin serves as the county seat and has a population of approximately 4,200. Today, Franklin’s downtown retains its traditional courthouse-square character, with locally owned shops, restaurants, museums and community events contributing to its small-town atmosphere. Much of Franklin’s appeal comes from its setting within the Nantahala National Forest, the largest of North Carolina’s four national forests. The forest covers more than 500,000 acres across several Western North Carolina counties and encompasses mountain ridges, river gorges, waterfalls and extensive hiking trails.
The surrounding area offers a range of outdoor recreation throughout the year. The Nantahala and Little Tennessee rivers provide opportunities for fly-fishing, paddling, rafting and kayaking, while the mountains are known for hiking, scenic overlooks and waterfalls. Wayah Bald, Wesser Bald and the trails around the Nantahala Gorge offer expansive views across the Southern Appalachians, and the nearby communities of Highlands and Cashiers provide additional access to hiking, waterfalls, golf, dining and other mountain amenities. Franklin is also known for its abundance of gemstones and minerals, earning it the nickname “Gem Capital of the World.” Rubies, sapphires, garnets and other stones have been found throughout Macon County, and gem mining remains a longstanding part of the local economy and culture.
The broader Western North Carolina region combines small mountain communities with substantial protected lands and a long tradition of seasonal visitation. Asheville serves as the region’s largest urban center, while towns such as Bryson City, Highlands, Cashiers, Sylva and Waynesville offer distinct communities surrounded by national forest, rivers and mountain terrain. The area’s combination of natural scenery, outdoor recreation and relatively accessible mountain towns has also supported a growing second-home and tourism economy.
