PETER BAY, ST. JOHN. Located within a picturesque cove on the north shore of St. John, and largely surrounded by the protected, National Park, Peter Bay is home to some of the most luxurious properties in the entire U.S. Virgin Islands. It’s no surprise that this exclusive, gated community is widely considered to be the most desirable location on the island.
Peter Bay offers sweeping, panoramic views of the shimmering Caribbean and surrounding islands, including popular destinations in the British Virgin Islands such as Jost van Dyke and Tortola. Although the community is exceptionally private and serene, it is conveniently located just a short distance from Cruz Bay, the island’s center of commerce and the location of its main port.
ST. JOHN, USVI. Considered the wealthiest island in the United States Virgin Islands (USVI), St. John combines white sand beaches and turquoise bays with luxurious boutiques and charming restaurants to create a Caribbean paradise. St. John is the USVI’s smallest island, measuring only nine miles long and three miles wide. It is situated four miles east of St. Thomas, which is the main hub of the USVIs and home to its major airport. The island of Tortola, a popular location in the British Virgin Islands (BVIs), is only 4 miles northeast of St. John.
Approximately 60% of St. John’s land area is encompassed by the Virgin Islands National Park, which was inaugurated in 1956 when Laurance Rockefeller donated a 50,000-acre parcel to the U.S. National Park Service. The preserved land provides ample opportunity for residents to hike through lush, natural forests and to swim or scuba through crystal clear water with vibrant coral reefs. The island’s natural beauty earned it a nod from the U.S. News & World Report as the “best place to visit” in the USVI.
St. John is also the USVI’s most private inhabited island. Its beaches – such as Trunk Bay – have been ranked by Conde Nast Traveler magazine as some of the best in the world. The south side of the island boasts serene, pebble sand beaches, many of which are only accessible on foot, while the western shoreline is comprised of immaculate, white sand beaches. The east and north faces of the island are dotted with private beaches and secluded villas and cottages.
THE UNITED STATES VIRGIN ISLANDS (USVI). Voted the best place to visit in the Caribbean by U.S. News and World Report, The U.S. Virgin Islands consist of St. Croix, St. John, St. Thomas and many other smaller, surrounding islands. Once arriving in the islands from the mainland United States (or elsewhere), many residents and visitors “Island Hop,” traveling amongst the various Virgin Islands for weekend getaways or day trips, typically by boat.
St. Croix is the largest of the islands in the territory and is famous for its calm and clear waters, perfect for scuba diving, snorkeling, and paddle boarding. Salt River Bay National Historic Park and Ecological Preserve is located on the north end of the island, boasting one of St. Croix’s two bioluminescent bays, offering rare views of glowing water created by the microorganisms living within.
Interesting Facts: The U.S. Virgin Islands lay claim to the largest community charter fleet in the Caribbean and is the only place under United States jurisdiction where the rule of the road is to drive on the left.
St. John is located four miles east of St. Thomas and approximately 60 percent of the island’s impeccable beaches are protected as Virgin Islands National Parks. Trunk Bay, dubbed one of the “Ten Best Beaches in the World” by Conde Nast Traveler, is located on the north shore and offers world-famous coral reefs for snorkeling and scuba diving.
