The Location

MIAMI, FL. The Miami metropolitan area encompasses nearly 6,200 square miles and three South Florida counties, making it the eighth-largest metropolitan area in the United States. The Miami area was inhabited by indigenous Native American tribes for a thousand years before 1566, when Pedro Menendez de Aviles landed and claimed the land for Spain. Spain ceded Florida to the United States in 1821, which grew steadily until 1890, when a young woman named Julia Tuttle purchased 640 acres of land and decided to develop a new city on the Miami River. Tuttle was largely responsible for Miami’s early growth – indeed, after the Great Freeze of 1894-1895 destroyed the central and northern Florida Orange Belt, Tuttle convinced Henry Flagler to extend the Florida East Coast Railway to her city. Once the railroad was completed, the population boomed, growing from 1,000 residents in 1896 to 5.5 million in 2006.

Several large corporations have headquarters in or around Miami, including Bacardi, Burger King, and Alienware; in addition, cruise lines from Celebrity to Carnival to Norwegian run their global operations from the area.
