McMURRAY / WASHINGTON COUNTY, PA. The Property is located in McMurray, Pennsylvania, a small municipality within Washington County, PA. With a population of over 208,000 people, Washington County is the 18th most populous county in the state, and has a total area of 861 square miles. Bordered on the west by Ohio and only 20-35 minutes from downtown Pittsburgh, the County was named for George Washington, and was created out of Westmoreland County in 1781.
As the location of the culmination of the Whiskey Rebellion of 1791, the County has long been political – indeed, the events of the Rebellion contributed to the formation of political parties in the United States. Washington and Jefferson College – located in Washington, PA, a small town within the County – was founded in 1781 and is one of the nation’s oldest institutions of higher education. “W&J” is consistently ranked as a top-tier, private liberal arts school.
Aside from its rich history, Washington County has been home to many notable residents, from recording artist Perry Como and Academy Award winner Shirley Jones to iJustine, a YouTube and social media celebrity. Ken Griffey Junior and Senior, Pete Henry, Arvin Lewis, Stan Musial, and Kurt and Marty Schottenheimer are just a few of the professional athletes who were born and raised in Washington County.
PITTSBURGH, PA. Sometimes called “The City of Bridges,” Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania is situated at the junction of the Allegheny and Monongahela Rivers where they meet to form the Ohio River (known as the “Three Rivers”). Once a town devoted to the production of steel, Pittsburgh has since evolved into a major city whose economy is driven by technology: Google, Apple, Facebook, and IBM are among the more than 1,600 technology firms that generate over $20 billion in annual Pittsburgh payrolls.
A focus on education, research and development has run deeply through the city, contributing to excellent job growth. Sixty-eight colleges and universities, including Carnegie Mellon and the University of Pittsburgh, have leading positions in the nation’s arts, computer science and medical fields.
Many people are unaware that Pittsburgh is a culturally rich city, being home to major arts venues such as Heinz Hall and the Benedum Center, in addition to several world-class museums, including the Andy Warhol Museum, the Carnegie Museum of Art, and The Frick Art and Historical Center. The Pittsburgh Zoo and PPG Aquarium, Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens, and the National Aviary have served as city attractions for over a century.
Pittsburgh is also proud of its sports teams, and for good reason: the Pittsburgh Pirates, Penguins and Steelers are some of the most respected teams in their leagues, with the Steelers currently holding the NFL record for Superbowl wins with six Lombardi trophies. For these and many other reasons, Pittsburgh has been ranked as the first or second “most livable city” in the United States five times since 2005 in The Economist’s Global Livability Ranking.
