Offering incredible, unobstructed water views, the residence also provides vistas of the 18th hole of The Club’s links-style golf course, designed by renowned course architects Donald Steel and Tom Mackenzie. Featuring challenging, “firm and fast” play, world-class practice facilities and instructional programs, the course at The Abaco Club has been rated the #1 golf course in the Bahamas by Golf Magazine – and was named a 2018 “Best Private Golf Club” by Forbes!
The villa’s wraparound porch and oceanside sun deck create perfect spaces to entertain, relax and enjoy the sound of crashing waves, or observe golfers finishing their play. Inside, the residence boasts a single-story open floor plan with vaulted ceilings. THE ABACO CLUB ON WINDING BAY, BHS. Crafted to be a true sporting club, The Abaco Club on Winding Bay offers members, homeowners and guests an unparalleled experience set on the tranquil turquoise waters of the Bahamas’ Abaco Islands. The 600-acre property was previously owned by Marriot Vacations worldwide and operated as a Ritz-Carlton Club until it was purchased in 2015 by renowned development company Southworth Development.
Since the purchase, Southworth has undertaken tens of millions of dollars’ worth of improvements at The Club, which offers a full suite of activities and entertainment for its members. The capital improvement plan has included the creation of an on-property market, expanded food and beverage offerings, the launch of a marina and boat slips in Little Harbour, upgrading the spa and fitness facilities, and developing new residences.
Amenities are many, and incredibly varied – but the real star of The Club is the 2.5-mile stretch of sugar sand beach that spans Winding Bay. The clear waters of the bay are sheltered from the waves of the Atlantic Ocean by a coral reef and a small island, making swimming and snorkeling relaxing experiences – swimmers may even glimpse a sea turtle or a dolphin in addition to many tropical fish.
Boaters have access to amazing waters and amenities as well: the Sea of Abaco is especially calm, making it an ideal location for sailing and motorboating alike, and The Abaco Yacht Club provides onshore services for boats up to 50ft. In addition to abundant natural beauty, The Club offers a challenging par 72 oceanfront golf course, watersports, fishing, two hard-surface tennis courts, two restaurants, and a world-class spa and fitness center; members are also given access to golf carts to make traversing the expansive property simple.
GREAT ABACO, BHS. The second-largest island in the Bahamian archipelago, Great Abaco lies in the northern end of the Bahamas roughly 180 miles east of Florida’s coast. Great and Little Abaco form the “mainland” of the island, which also contains numerous barrier cays (small, sandy islands on the surface of underlying coral reefs), some of which boast their own towns. The north side of Great Abaco hosts the Leonard M. Thompson International Airport, the main gateway to the Abacos, as well as the city of Marsh Harbour. Marsh Harbour is the commercial center of the Abacos, and is also the third-largest city in the Bahamas; other settlements of note include Coopers Town and Fox Town in the north and Cherokee and Sandy Point in the south.
Formed of limestone, the island has moderate elevation, and its cays are green with mangroves. Those mangrove roots provide habitats for bonefish, permit (a type of pompano) and tarpon and create some of the finest saltwater flats fishing in the world. Exceptional fishing isn’t the only draw, however; watersports from ocean kayaking to sailing are equally popular, as is just relaxing on the beach underneath a natural palm frond umbrella. Labelled an “out island” due to its distance from New Providence and Grand Bahama, Abaco embraces its seclusion and draws travelers from across the globe who prefer to unplug and unwind among the palms and calm, warm waters of this island paradise.
