FAR HILLS, NJ. With a population of fewer than one thousand people, the borough of Far Hills, New Jersey easily fits the definition of a small town. However, its roster of residents has included big names such as Nicholas F. Brady (former U.S. Secretary of the Treasury) and the Forbes family, in addition to various musicians, race car drivers and former Governors and Senators.
Encompassing nearly 5 square miles within Somerset County, Far Hills is surrounded by equally exclusive communities such as Bedminster Township, Bernards Township and Bernardsville. In fact, Far Hills shares a community pool, athletic programs and an award-winning school system with Bernardsville, while sharing a library, fire department and first aid team with Bedminster Township.
The borough was created when Evander Schley, a land developer and real estate broker from New York, purchased thousands of acres in what was then Bernardsville in the 1880’s. During a family visit, his sister-in-law Elizabeth was so taken by the beauty of the “far hills” of the area that the moniker stuck, giving it a name before any actual development began.
That beauty is maintained today by 10-acre-minimum zoning laws, which have led to the development of stately homes on large parcels of land, all surrounding a quaint downtown.
A majority of residents commute to Manhattan, and with up to 42 daily trains to and from Port Authority, there’s no need to sit in traffic.
The Butler’s Pantry Trackside and deli-style fare at M&M Perrotti’s, to Natirar’s Ninety Acres, a farm-to-table restaurant celebrating local cuisine. (Natirar is an incredible county park that includes an exclusive hotel, spa and restaurant complex).
Shopping and dining options in Far Hills are varied, and range from gourmet sandwiches at The Butler’s Pantry Trackside and deli-style fare at M&M Perrotti’s, Natirar’s Ninety Acres, a farm-to-table restaurant celebrating local cuisine. (Natirar is an incredible county park that includes an exclusive hotel, spa and restaurant complex.)
Despite these amenities, Far Hill’s primary appeal is arguably its natural beauty. Outdoor activities aren’t just limited to hiking or biking – in fact, one of New Jersey’s premiere social events is centered on the Far Hills Race Meeting’s Grand National Steeplechase. The most prestigious race in American steeplechase, the Grand National attracts as many as 75,000 people annually. Race day purses can equal one million dollars – or more! – and the organization has given more than $18 million to local healthcare organizations.
SOMERSET COUNTY, NJ. Located in central New Jersey just one hour from Manhattan, Somerset County is the 13th-most populous of the state’s 21 counties, and the second-most affluent. Indeed, Somerset is the 7th wealthiest county in the United States by median household income, and its residents are also among New Jersey’s healthiest, ranked 3rd out of 21 counties. The county’s numerous parks and recreational opportunities certainly contribute to that ranking, and hiking, biking, jogging, horseback riding and boating in the area’s 14,500 acres of open space are widely enjoyed.
The second-largest public facility in the county park system, Lord Stirling Park, covers 990 acres in Bernards Township and is designated solely for environmental and equestrian activities – all levels of horseback riding lessons are offered, and trails are available whether you choose to rent a horse or ride your own.
Another popular way to enjoy the great outdoors is golf, and Somerset County offers five public courses with online tee time booking at very reasonable rates as well as an acclaimed Junior Golf program that has produced several PGA professionals.
Neshanic Valley, the newest facility of the five, has been ranked by Golfweek as one of the top 50 municipal courses in the United States and is consistently ranked among the best in New Jersey. Should a more exclusive experience be desired, the Trump National Golf Club at Bedminster is just 15 minutes from Far Hills in the heart of Somerset County.
Although Somerset County is close to major corporations headquartered in New York City, many international businesses are choosing to move their headquarters to Somerset County to take advantage of the world-class workforce and proximity to Newark Liberty International Airport. Nestle Health Science, Linde Americas, and Daiichi Sankyo are just a few of the industry giants new to the area, with Nestle alone committing $100 million to their offices in the former Sanofi U.S. Research and Development Center in Bridgewater. The well-educated, affluent residents of Somerset County could find their commute to work dramatically reduced with excellent jobs at these global corporations available so close to home.
