COOPERSTOWN, NY. Founded by noted novelist James Fenimore Cooper, Cooperstown is an idyllic example of small-town USA – at least to the eye! A two-block Main Street boasts the only traffic light in the town, and the year-round resident count tops out at approximately 2,200. However, there is much more to this small community than its size suggests. Immortalized in the novels of its founder, Cooperstown became a playground and retreat for the rich and famous, drawing families from the Rockefellers to the Busch family of Anheuser-Busch fame to build county estates in the area. Many famous faces still maintain residences in Cooperstown (including members of the Busch family), and celebrities such as Wade Boggs and Johnny Bench have been spotted en route to the world-renowned Baseball Hall of Fame.
Aside from baseball (which is said to have been first played by a young man named Abner Doubleday in Cooperstown itself), opportunities for entertainment are plentiful and range from world-class opera at the summer-long Glimmerglass Festival to tasting tours at Brewery Ommegang, whose belgian-style beers regularly take home honors at the World Beer Cup (they were even named Best Mid-Sized Brewery in 2016). To truly experience the beauty of Cooperstown, however, a visit to Otsego Lake and the Howe Caverns is recommended. The 7.8 mile-long lake borders Cooperstown, offering boating, kayaking and swimming, while the caverns have been a popular tourist attraction for over 100 years.
OTSEGO COUNTY, NY. Only 3 hours from the bustle of Manhattan, Otsego County is an unparalleled retreat from city life where scenic vistas of rolling hills, sparkling lakes, and rich farmland abound. Agriculture is very much a part of the community, with more than 220,000 acres devoted to 870 farms in the county, at an average farm size of 250 acres. The wide-open spaces so well-suited to produce and livestock also house two exceptional golf courses: Otsego Golf Club, opened in 1894 by one of the first avid golfers in America, Leslie Pell-Clarke, and The Leatherstocking Golf Club, one of the East’s most scenic (and challenging!) courses, designed in 1909 by Deveraux Emmet.
With its natural beauty, it is no wonder tourists flock to Otsego County in the summer to enjoy its lakes, trails and horseback riding. Much of the local economy is dependent on tourism, with many hotels, bed and breakfasts, shops and restaurants on hand to serve the surge of visitors that travel up from New York City on weekends and for extended vacations. 3,000 local residents are also employed by Bassett Medical Center, whose 180-bed teaching hospital is headquartered in Cooperstown. Otsego County’s location is ideal for those searching for second homes as well as primary residences, not only due to its proximity to Manhattan, but also because local property taxes are among the lowest in the state, and far more favorable than in neighboring counties or states with secondary home markets.
