DALLAS, OR. The county seat of Polk County, Oregon, Dallas occupies nearly 5 square miles and is home to more than 16,000 residents. Settled in the 1840s on the north side of the Rickreall Creek, the settlement was originally named Cynthiana after a resident’s hometown in Kentucky; however, once the settlement was chosen as the county seat a more suitable name was required. Taking inspiration from President James K. Polk (for whom the county was named), residents chose to honor George Mifflin Dallas, Polk’s Vice-President, and the settlement was incorporated as a city in 1901. Dallas is now classified as a “mid-valley” community owing to its ideal location between Portland and Eugene.
Centrally sited in the Willamette Valley, Dallas has much to offer its residents: beautiful city parks, the Rickreall Creek Trail System, the Dallas Aquatic Center and proximity to both the larger town of Salem and the gorgeous coastline. These amenities and more make Dallas ideal for raising a family while commuting to Salem or Portland. Dallas is also committed to business, with incentive packages, streamlined permitting and an involved economic development team; benefits include one of the lowest tax rates in Oregon, easy rail and highway access, and a strong economic base in retail, specialty manufacturing, education and healthcare.
WILLAMETTE VALLEY, OR. Comprised of 150 miles of gorgeous landscapes stretching from Portland to Eugene, the famed Willamette Valley is traversed by an eponymous river and runs through the heart of Oregon. Framed by three mountain ranges (the Cascade Range to the east, the Oregon Coast Range to the west and the Calapooya Mountains to the south), the valley’s climate is uniquely mild, sheltered as it is – storms are rare, temperatures are mild, and the alluvial soil is extremely conducive to farming. More than 170 different crop and livestock items are produced here, including legumes, tree fruits, nuts, and – of course! – wine grapes.
Perhaps best known for its contribution to American viticulture, the Willamette Valley is the source of some of the nation’s finest Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, and Chardonnay. The cool, misty climate produces elegant, restrained wines in direct opposition to the fruity heft of California’s offerings. Indeed, the climate is often compared to Burgundy and Alsace, two revered winemaking regions in France. Wine culture is celebrated in the local communities with events like “Uncork Polk County” and tastings at the nearly 600 area wineries, but the region is also known for producing hops that flavor the craft beer of breweries across the nation.
