The borough was created when Evander Schley, a land developer and real estate broker from New York, purchased thousands of acres in what was then Bernardsville in the 1880’s. During a family visit, his sister-in-law Elizabeth was so taken by the beauty of the “far hills” of the area that the moniker stuck, giving it a name before any actual development began.
