INDIAN BEACH – SAPPHIRE SHORES. Indian Beach-Sapphire Shores is a charming Sarasota community located on the sparkling Sarasota Bay. Known as “Sarasota’s Historic Bayfront Neighborhood,” the community stretches from just north of the Ringling Museum of Art, to just south of the Ringling College of Art and Design.
An eclectic mix of homes comprises the community, ranging from modern estates (many influenced by the Sarasota School of Architecture), to 1920’s Mediterranean mansions and cottage-style bungalows. The Indian Beach-Sapphire Shore Association (IBSSA) is dedicated to maintaining the Old Florida charm of the community, including the preservation of the natural Florida vegetation that provides its tropical ambiance.
Waterfront properties in the community enjoy especially spectacular sunsets, with direct western vistas of the sun sinking into the horizon beyond Longboat Key. The Sarasota Bay is also a popular spot for manatee sightings.
The IBSSA nurtures a strong sense of community for its residents, and maintains its own Facebook page, website, and online newsgroup. The Association also hosts an annual picnic, neighborhood yard sale and arts festival, in addition to having the city’s oldest Neighborhood Watch program.
Indian Beach-Sapphire Shores is also home to, or within close proximity of, an impressive collection of educational and cultural amenities, such as the New College, the University of South Florida, and the Ringling College of Art and Design, in addition to the Ringling Museum, Sarasota Ballet, Asolo Theater, Sarasota Orchestra, and the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall.
The famous, white sand beaches of Lido Key are within a 10-minute drive of the community, while the vibrant downtown area is only 2-3 minutes away.
SARASOTA, FLORIDA. Sarasota County is located on Florida’s Gulf Coast, approximately 60 miles south of Tampa. The county encompasses the Sarasota Bay and several small islands known as “keys.” Some of the world’s finest white sand beaches can be found on these islands, which include Lido Key, Siesta Key and Longboat Key.
The climate, landscape and modern infrastructure of Sarasota attract a diverse population of more than 390,000 full-time residents, with an interesting mix of business owners, working families and retirees. The area’s unofficial motto is, “Just another day in paradise.”
Once the winter home of the Ringling family (of Ringling Brothers Circus fame), Sarasota hosts a number of cultural attractions, most notably the Ringling Museum of Art and the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall. The Ringling Museum of Art, built by John Ringling, houses a permanent collection of fine art from around the world. (The Ringling’s former private estate, the Cà d’Zan Mansion, is also a popular museum and tourist attraction).
Owned by the City of Sarasota, the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall is situated along Sarasota’s beautiful Bayfront. The 25,0000-square foot Hall has welcomed a broad range of performers and shows, including world-class symphonies, classical and modern dance companies, jazz artists, pop legends and comedy in addition to Broadway musicals.
Blessed with beautiful weather, Sarasota excels at outdoor activities from boating and fishing to biking and beach combing. In the late 1880s, golf was introduced to the Sarasota area from Scotland, and today there are more than 30 golf courses surrounding the downtown Sarasota area.
Getting to paradise is convenient, whether by air or highway: Sarasota County is home to the Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport, and is also located just off of Interstate 95, the main corridor for long distance, north-south travel in the eastern United States.
