WEST FALMOUTH, MA. Located on the “shoulder” of Massachusetts’ famed summer destination in the Upper Cape, West Falmouth is a small, exclusive enclave of the larger town of Falmouth, founded by Quakers in 1661. Noted for its history and proximity to Buzzard’s Bay (one of the four major bodies of water on the Cape in addition to Nantucket Sound, Cape Cod Bay, and the Atlantic Ocean), West Falmouth also has the distinction of being within a 15 minute drive of both the Bourne and Sagamore bridges, which connect the Cape to mainland Massachusetts. Livelier than the towns of Chatham and Orleans to its east, West Falmouth enjoys a healthy balance between year-round residents and the visitors who summer on its shore – though locals maintain the entire Cape sinks a foot in July and August from the weight of the tourists.
Saconesset Hills Association maintains the private streets and beaches where the Property is located, and a modest yearly fee of $500 contributes to maintenance, security and use of a pristine, private sandy beach accessible via an owners-only parking lot and a footpath from within the community. Residents may open their homes to guests, and visitor passes are available to extend the amenities of the neighborhood to friends and family who can’t resist visiting this uniquely American destination. Year-round activities abound on the Upper Cape, and range from the famed College Light Opera Company’s summer performances to the annual Christmas Parade, and – perhaps most famous of all – the Falmouth Road Race, whose 7-mile route is considered one of the premiere non-marathon races in the country, attracting over 10,000 runners who compete for its five-figure prize each year. The famed Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute (developers of the underwater rover that discovered the remains of the Titanic) and the tony Falmouth Yacht Club provide education and entertainment for those who prefer water activities to land.
CAPE COD, MA. 18,000 years ago, retreating glaciers carved out the bays, marshes and ponds of Cape Cod. Named, supposedly, for the abundance of its namesake fish, the waterways of the Cape have been drawing people to their beauty since the pilgrims of the Mayflower arrived in 1620. Unknown to many, the pilgrims who fled religious persecution in England first came ashore in the New World at Provincetown where they drafted the Mayflower Compact, creating one of the world’s first forms of democratic government.
Modern day Cape Cod is an eclectic, exciting place where locals and visitors meet to enjoy the distinct villages that make up the four portions of the Cape where restaurants, shops, and art galleries abound. Whether the appeal of whale-watching in Provincetown or the allure of fishing Chatham’s bluefish schools is stronger, the wild beauty of Cape Cod ensures that visitors will continue to flock to its miles of coastline for years to come.
